Elmer Vincent Cleland, age 79 of Blairsville, by God's tender mercy, went home to be with his Lord on Sunday, January 2, 2011. Mr. Cleland was born January 2, 1932 in Rockdale County, GA to Mercer Thomas Cleland and Lillian Abbott Cleland . Mr. Cleland had lived in Lithonia, Georgia for 63 years before retiring to the North Georgia Mountains. He was a member of the Turner Hill Baptist Church in Lithonia, but he regularly attended Bethlehem Baptist Church in Blairsville. Elmer loved his family, his church and his fellow members. He loved everything about Country Life. Mr. Cleland was preceded in death by his son, David Cleland, grandson, Brett Wasendorf, parents, Mercer Thomas and Lillian Abbott Cleland, sister, Vassie Carden and brother, Harold Thomas.
Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Dot Cleland of Blairsville, daughter, Beverly Wasendorf of Conyers, GA, son, Daniel Cleland of Loganville, GA, grandson, Rob Wasendorf of Milledgeville, GA, grandson, Trent Cleland and granddaughter, Kayla Cleland, both of Loganville, great grandson, Damion Wasendorf of Conyers, great granddaughter, Rianna Wasendorf of Appleton, WI, sister, Beatrice Wilson of Gainesville, FL, sister, Valeria Kelley and her husband, Bert of Social Circle, GA and brother, Mercer Cleland Jr. of Lithonia. Many nieces, nephews and friends also survive.
Funeral services are scheduled for 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 5, 2011 from the Turner Hill Baptist Church in Lithonia with Rev. Cotton Harris and Rev. Lanny Myers officiating. Interment will be in the Turner Hill Cemetery. The family will recieve friends at the Cochran Funeral Home of Blairsville Monday evening from 6 until 9 p.m. Visitation will be held Tuesday evening at the Doug Henry Funeral Home in Lithonia. The following gentlemen have been requested to serve as pallbearers: Rick Groover, Ken Carden, Keith Cleland, Harry Robert Foster III, Marron Abbott and Mercer Cleland, Jr.. Al Johnson will serve as Honorary pallbearer.
