Edna Lois Harper Cox was born February 24, 1925, near Mineral Bluff, Georgia. She died January 1, 2015, in Manchester, Tennessee. She was 89 years old. Her parents were Claude Ezra Harper and Hattie Deweese Harper. The family moved to Epworth, Georgia, in 1930, so that she could attend Epworth School. She graduated from High School at Epworth in 1943.
On June 23, 1945, she married Clyde Cox. They were married for 34 years until his death on December 8, 1979.
Edna worked for over 30 years as a chemical analyst in the laboratory at the Tennessee Copper Company, later Cities Service. She retired in 1988.
First Baptist Church, Epworth, was an important part of her life for 84 years. Her family started attending there in 1930 when she was five years old. Edna accepted Christ as her Savior in a revival there in the summer of 1939 when she was fourteen. She was baptized in the Toccoa River near Galloway. She and Clyde were married in the pastor's home there. Both her father and husband were deacons there. She taught fifth and sixth graders in Sunday School and worked in Vacation Bible School for many years. She was president of the Women's Missionary Union for six years. She served as church treasurer and clerk for 33 years.
Edna is survived by one son, Brenton Cox, and his wife, Cyndi, of Manchester, Tennessee. She has two grandsons, Zac Cox, and his wife, Emily, who live in Nashville, Tennessee, and Gavin Cox, and his wife, Amy, who live in Chattanooga, Tennessee. She has three great-grandsons, Cooper, Hank, and Quinn Cox. She is also survived by a sister, Eula Langley, of Huntsville, Alabama, and by two nephews, Scott Plemmons and his wife, Debbie, and Kevin Plemmons and his wife, Mary.
Visitation will be at the First Baptist Church, Epworth on Saturday, January 3, 2015, 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM. The funeral service will be held Sunday, January 4, 2015, at 3:00 PM at First Baptist Church, Epworth, Georgia. The funeral will be led by Dr. Tom Jordan, Dr. Brenton Cox, and Rev. Doug Simonds and Dr. Chan Mitchell. Burial will be at First Baptist Church Cemetery, Epworth, Georgia.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the general fund of First Baptist Church, Epworth, Georgia, or Finish the Work fund of First Baptist Church, Manchester, Tennessee.
