Edgar M. Mason

Cochran Funeral Home of Blairsville announces funeral services for Mr. Edgar M. Mason, age 90, of Blairsville, who passed away Saturday, September 13, 2014 at his home.

Mr. Mason was born in Murphy, North Carolina, on June 27, 1924, a son of the late Garther Mason and the late Hettie Turner Mason. Edgar had lived most of his life in Blairsville, and was a farmer for over 70 years, growing collards and raising chickens. Edgar was a man who was not afraid of work. After he was past retirement age, he still would work all night at Union County Nursing Home as a CNA, finish his shift, and then work another 10-12 hours in the fields doing farming. Edgar was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. Besides his parents, Edgar had been preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Everett Mason, and a son, Neal Edgar Mason; sisters, Lenne Plott, and Tiny Brown; and brothers, Demas Mason and Lee Mason. Two grandchildren have also preceded Edgar in death: Jason Neal Gillespie and Candi Mason.

Edgar will be tenderly remembered and greatly missed by his loving family members: son and daughter-in-law, Nathan Conrad and Annette Mason, of Gainesville, Georgia; daughter and son-in-law, Karen Sue and Ralph Gillespie; son and daughter-in-law, Avery Franklin and Carol Mason; son, Raymond Bird Mason; and son and daughter-in-law, Bryan Hayward and Tammy Mason, all of Blairsville; brothers: Lewis Mason and Clayton Mason, both of Covington, Georgia; sisters, Annie Mae Plott and Doris Brown, both of Blairsville; seven grandchildren: Kevin Mason, Eric Mason, Shawn Gillespie, Jesse Mason, Jordan Mason, April Collins and Curtis Mason. Great Grandchildren: Slayton Gillespie, Jason Gillespie, and Ty Collins. Many friends and many other relatives also survive.

Funeral Services for Edgar have been scheduled for Tuesday, September 16, 2014, at 2:00 p.m., to be held in the Chapel of Cochran Funeral Home of Blairsville. The following gentlemen have been selected to serve as pallbearers: Charlie Brown, Cecil Brown, Shawn Gillespie, Jimmy Spiva, Curtis Mason, and Wayne Everett. Selected to serve as honorary escort to the family are Jordan Mason, Wayne Hedden, and George Upchurch. Burial will be in Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church Cemetery, where he will be laid to rest next to his wife, Virginia.

Visitation will be held at the funeral home, and will start on Sunday, September 14, 2014, with the family meeting with friends between the hours of 6 until 9; and again on Monday evening, from 6 until 9 p.m.
