Earnest Hoyt Boring died Friday, August 23, 2013 at the Fannin Regional Hospital in Blue Ridge, Georgia, with his family at his side. He was 91 years of age.
Hoyt is survived by his wife of 70 years, Geneva West Boring. His children are Linda Flynn (Kohlan), Ernie Boring (Teresa), Pat Boring (Sue), Sharon Westmoreland (Ronnie) and Angie Pope (Lewis).
Hoyt was "GrandHoyt" to his 16 grandchildren- Michelle Mills, Marshall Boring, Isaac Boring, Jennifer Zarins, Barry Westmoreland, Amber Wills, Betsy Wintermantel, Erin McFaddin, Lindy Blalock, Katie Pope, E.L. Pope, IV, Emily Pope, Elle Pope, Olivia Pope, Sarah Moore and Barry Moore. Fourteen great grand children brought smiles to Hoyt's face.
Hoyt was preceded in death by three grandchildren, Katie Pope, E.L. Pope, IV and Sarah Moore and his mother, Bertha Boring, his father, Charles Boring, his brothers, Clemmer Boring, John Edgar Boring and his sister, Bernice Raper.
Hoyt served in the Army Air Corps with the 15th Air Force during WWII as a Flight Engineer and Top Turret Gunner aboard a B-17 Bomber flying over Italy, Africa, Germany and the Middle East with the requirement to "engage the enemy" with one of the aircraft guns. He rose to the rank of T/Sgt. while serving in three campaigns.
Following the war, Hoyt was employed by the TVA for 46 years as a Journeyman Machinist. He began working in 1941 and served at Appalachia Dam, Fontana Dam, South Holeston, Watauga Dam, Boone Hydros, Kingston Steam Plant and the Hiawassee Hydro Plant.
At his retirement, Frank Adkins, Manager of Hydro Operation said, "I would like to thank you for being one of that fine group of people to whose efforts the Valley owes its existence and continuation of it's power system. It was a job worth doing, and you played your part in it to the full."
Hoyt enjoyed retirement by utilizing his skills in cattle farming, operating his sawmill and loving his family, friends, and his home.
Hoyt was a member of the Liberty Baptist Church for 78 years. He was a member of the Montgomery 246 Masonic Lodge. He gave many years of work to the upkeep of the Liberty Community Cemetery.
Funeral services for Mr. Earnest Hoyt Boring will be held on Monday, August 26, 2013 at 11:00AM from the Finch-Cochran Funeral Home with Rev. Jerry Morrow officiating. Music will be provided by Janice Reid. Internment will follow in the Liberty Baptist Church Cemetery.
Visitation will be held Monday, August 26, 2013 from 10:30AM till 11:00AM from the Finch-Cochran Funeral Home.
