Dorothy Louise Pless Griggs, age 94, of McCaysville, passed away peacefully Friday, October 1, 2021, surrounded by family at her daughter’s home in Columbus, Georgia. Mrs. Griggs was born November 13, 1926, in Copperhill, Tennessee, to the late Mariman Lee Pless and the late Bessie Marie Ware Pless. She was a devoted and very involved member of McCaysville United Methodist Church for over 70 years, and served as Treasurer and Sunday morning Greeter for many decades as well as a Sunday school teacher, youth group leader, and joyful choir member. Dorothy’s greatest joys were serving and taking care of others and being with family and friends. She loved cooking and baking, and the fellowship it brought. She had a lively spirit, a brilliant smile, and a love for being at the heart of things. She was preceded in death by her father; mother; husband O.C. Griggs, Jr.; son Charles Lee Griggs; sister and closest friend Doris Elizabeth Williams; siblings-in-law, D.B. Williams, Berta Anderson, Drucilla Panter, Ophelia Galloway, George Griggs, Helen Gilliam, and Imogene Deal; niece, Betty Ruth Thurman; and many lifelong best friends including Josephine and Hobert Williams and Hilda Bailey.
Survivors include her daughter, Carolyn Louise Griggs Mull, grandchildren, Kevin Mull, Melissa (Geoffrey Schwartz) Mull, Amber (Ryan Close) Mull, and sister-in-law, Ozella Hellerstedt. Aunt Dot is also survived by many loving and beloved nephews, nieces, great-nephews, and great-nieces. Dorothy had many dear friends including Sue Godfrey, Sandra Williams, Laurel Bailey, J.E. and Martha Adams, and Sharon Foster.
A funeral service to celebrate Dorothy’s life will be held on Friday, October 8, 2021, at 2:00 pm at the Finch-Cochran Funeral Home Chapel with her pastor Rev. Larry Russell officiating. Interment will follow in the Barnes Chapel Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Walter Lee Williams, James Earl Williams, Daniel Williams, Robert Hellerstedt, Jr., Evan Hellerstedt, and Brett Deal. Honorary pallbearers will be Earl Williams, Anthony Deal, Patrick Holloway, Brandon Holloway, and Ryan Holloway.
The family will receive friends at the Finch-Cochran Funeral Home Chapel of McCaysville, Friday, October 8, 2021, 12:00 pm - 2:00 pm.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to McCaysville United Methodist Church or the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
