Cochran Funeral Home of Blairsville announces funeral services for Mrs. Doris Hunter Souther, age 88, native and lifelong resident of Blairsville, who passed away early on Thursday morning, May 21, 2015 in Union General Hospital in Blairsville.
Doris was born in Blairsville on February 2, 1927, a daughter of the late James Hayes Hunter and the late Lydia Dyer Hunter. She was a member of Choestoe Baptist Church, and a teacher with the Union County School System for 31 years. Doris taught several generations of children, both in the school and in her church. Doris had an abounding love for her family, for the children in her care, and for her community....she was widely known and loved in these mountains that she called her home. Her beloved husband Warren had preceded her in death, along with seven of her brothers and sisters: Howard Hunter, Hazel Collins, Irene Schuler, Blanche Swain, Lucille Johnson, Mary Lou Walker, and James Hunter.
Family members left to treasure her memory are her children: Bill Souther, of Blairsville; Roxanne Souther Barrett and Danny Barrett, of Hiawassee; and Chris Souther, of Blairsville; a brother and sister-in-law, Franklin and Carol Hunter, of Blairsville; four grandchildren: Brandi Barrett and Bethany Barrett, both of Hiawassee; and Lauren Souther and Christopher Souther, both of Blairsville.
Many dear friends and relatives also survive.
Funeral services have been scheduled for Sunday, May 24, 2015, at 2:00 p.m., to be held at Choestoe Baptist Church. The body will lie instate at the church on Sunday, starting at 1:30 p.m.
The following gentlemen have been selected to serve as pallbearers: Buddy Hunter, Bill Collins, Lamar Paris, Mack McEuan, Jeff Burks, and Henry Nutt. Burial will take place in Choestoe Cemetery, where Doris will be laid to rest next to her husband Warren. Visitation will be held at Cochran Funeral Home on Saturday evening, from 6 until 9 p.m.
