The Cochran Funeral Home & Crematory announces Memorial Services for Mrs. Donnie "DJ" Brown of Blairsville, GA who passed away on Friday, September 18, 2015 at home under the care of Homestead Hospice after a courageous two year battle with kidney cancer. Mrs. Brown was born on April 12, 1945, in St. Petersburg, FL and attended local schools and graduated from St. Petersburg High School in 1963. She attended Florida Southern College in Lakeland, FL and graduated in 1967 with a Bachelor Degree in Education and taught history at Boca Ciega High School and Shorecrest Preparatory. While in college she served one year as president of her sorority, Alpha Gamma Delta.
After staying home to raise her son, DJ wanted to do some type of work in the community and went into domestic violence work as a volunteer at the Center Against Spousal Abuse (CASA). She was eventually hired as a full time employee and spent several years as their housing director.
Upon her husband's retirement in December, 2010, they moved to Blairsville and had a home built. Mrs. Brown was a loving, caring wife, mother, and grandmother. She was preceded in death by her father and mother, Zelmar and Donnie Greenway.
Survivors include her husband of 47 years, Alan C. (Bud); a son, Matthew A. and daughter-in-law, Lorie and two granddaughters, Madison and Kaitlyn, of Lakeland, Florida. In addition she is survived by several relatives and many friends.
Memorial services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 10, 2015 at the House of Prayer Interdenominational Church with Rev. Jerry Helton officiating.The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until the service begins. A private inurnment will be at Providence United Methodist Church Cemetery.
