Donald "Don" Long, 84, of Hiawassee GA, passed away peacefully on May 6, 2016, with his family by his side, at the Clay County Care Center in Hayesville, NC.
Mr. Long was born on October 22, 1931 in Booneshill, TN, a son of the late Casper and Effie Tratham Long. He was also preceded in death by his brothers, William "Bill" Long, Alton Long, and Robert Long; a sister, Frances Long; a stepson, Bryan Gorby; and a step grandson, Alex Gorby.
Surviving Mr. Long are his wife of 40 years, Betty Galliher Long; his canine companion, Roxy; a daughter, Carla Wood and her husband Garry, of Fairmont, WV; a stepson, Dr. Bruce Gorby, of Elkins, WV; a brother, Bernard Long and his wife Gloria, of Falls Church, VA, a sister in law, Joy Long, of Chattanooga, TN, a granddaughter, Jenna Wood of Fairmont, WV; step granddaughters, Victoria Gorby and Sophia Gorby, both of Clarksburg, WV, and Gabrielle "Gabby" Gorby of Waverly, WV; and several nieces and nephews.
Mr. Long was in the Marines for seven years, including service in Korea. He was employed by Fairmont Wall Plaster and Standard Oil of Ohio. He later founded and owned LAPCO Industries in Columbus, Ohio. In retirement, he pursued other business activities.
Mr. Long had a deep love for the Lord, his family, and his dog. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends, studying the Bible, pursuing current events, and investing. Previous interests included crossword puzzles, boating, fishing, golfing, and hunting.
A memorial service will be held at Christ the King Church in Hiawassee on May 21, 2016 at 3:00 p.m. with Rev. Dr. Don O'Malley officiating. Committal will be at Rest Haven Memorial Gardens in Fairmont, WV. Cochran Funeral Home of Hiawassee is in charge of arrangements. Online condolences may be made at www.cochranfuneralhomes.com.
