Airborne Ranger Infantry

It is with profound sadness our family announces the death of our beloved husband and father, at the home, on Jan. 7th 2008 at the age of 67. Throughout his courageous battle with emphysema, he displayed extraordinary dignity, strength, and faith in His Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. He was the only child of George and Harriett Fields, born in El Paso, Texas. He grew up in Texas, and worked at a Uranium mine in Utah as a young man before joining the US Army in 1956. He made this his career for the 30 years that followed.
He retired after 30 years active duty in 1986 at Ft. Stewart in Savannah, GA as a Sgt. Maj. in the US Army and as a Captain in the Reserve Officer Corps. During his Service to our country he served three combat tours in Vietnam, and Panama as a Green Beret. His awards include two Silver Stars, two Bronze Stars with Combat V, three Purple Hearts, Army Commendation with Combat V, Combat Infantry Badge, Master Parachutist, and Airborne and Ranger Tabs as well as numerous other personal and unit awards.
He was a member of the Cherokee Nation (Western Band), Role #C00162611. Both his mother and father were of Cherokee lineage. He was a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and Disabled American Veterans. He loved traveling and learning the history of people around the Nation and the World. He delighted in the land/wilderness, nature and creatures of the earth. He was an avid motorcycle rider, (Harley's), since the age of eighteen. His interests included training and showing horses in South America, Texas and New Mexico and collecting guns.
Shortly after retiring he met and fell in love with his wife, Julie Fields. They were married 16 years living in Cocoa Beach, Florida and then in 1995 moving to Blue Ridge, Georgia. He leaves four adult children, Ira Clayton Fields of Houston Texas; Michael John Waranis, III, of Virginia Beach, Virginia; Theresa Irene Mazziotti, of Blue Ridge, Georgia and Michelle Anne Shafaat, of Orlando, Florida. He had four grandchildren Grandsons: Matthew X. Mazziotti, Faysal Shawn Shafaat, Imran R. Shafaat; Granddaughter: Alia Summer Shafaat. He also leaves his furry companion, Willow, who sat at his side all day every day for eleven years.
