The Cochran Funeral Home & Crematory of Blairsville announces memorial services for Mr. Donald Bruce Allis, age 91 of Blairsville who passed away on Thursday, December 26, 2013 at his home.
Donald was born March 1, 1922 in Ohio to the late Bruce and Iona (Leach) Allis. He was raised during the depression era where he was taught how to manage his resources wisely. Later, He attended college, but was called upon to serve in the United States Army during World War II. His combat military service began as a Private where he fought in the Battle of the Bulge and quickly earned a battlefield commission as a Lieutenant. Serving as an Infantry & Cavalry Platoon Leader, Donald was awarded many medals including the Bronze Star for Valor. After the conclusion of the war, Donald became a Commercial Flight Engineer and a Pilot for Airlines such as Eastern Airlines and National Airlines. He eventually retired from Pan Am Airlines.
Donald was a man of integrity who embraced the value of loyalty, duty and service to others. His responsible and kind hearted nature led him to be accomplished in whatever he set his mind to. Equipped with a mechanical mind, Donald could fix anything. He was dependable and constantly supportive of his family and friends. Always working hard to provide for those he loved. He was quick to listen, but slow to speak, but when he spoke it was with honesty and openness.
He will be fondly remembered by all who knew him, but especially missed by his family: daughter, Ruth Anne Sommerfeld; son, Danny Ray Allis; stepdaughter, Denise Franson; stepsons, Andrew R., David J. and Kenneth H. DeVito. 10 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild also share in his legacy. He was preceded in death by his 1st wife, Geneva Hutchinson Allis; his 2nd wife, Louise Hewitt Allis; and his son, Robert B. Allis.
A Memorial Service with military honors will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Monday, December 30, 2013 at the Georgia National Cemetery in Canton, Georgia.
