Marjorie Dolores Gibbs, age 83 of Morganton, Georgia, passed away at home, surrounded by family, on Tuesday, March 12, 2024. She is survived by her devoted husband of 56 years, David Gibbs, and her loving daughters and sons-in-law, Leah and Tom Jarrell, and Gina and Greg Linder. She is also survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Bubba and Anne Gibbs, her grandchildren: Megan, Ashley, Doug, Nelson, Caleb, and Rachel, and her great grandchildren: Avery, Analeigh, Cooper, and Talia. She is also survived by her brother and sister-in-law Joe and Barbara Chancey, sister-in-law, Marie Chancey, and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews. She was proceeded in death by her parents, Willard and Myrtle Chancey, and her brother, Gilbert Chancey.
Dolores was born in Copperhill, TN on May 22, 1941, where she grew up the daughter of a Copper Miner. Later, she moved to Mineral Bluff, GA where her mother and father owned Chancey Grocery. Dolores graduated from East Fannin High School in 1958 where she was a cheerleader and Homecoming Queen. She went to beauty school, became a cosmetologist, and owned her own shop for 6 years.
On July 15, 1967, Dolores married the love of her life, David Gibbs. They moved to Woodstock, GA in 1968 where David worked as an elevator technician. Dolores and David wanted to raise their children in the country and moved back to Mineral Bluff where Leah, Bubba, and Gina were born. David commuted to Chattanooga, and Dolores stayed at home to raise her children. Her nephews, Don, Keith, and Tony, also lived with David and Dolores for a period of time and became what Dolores called "The Boys."
In 1987, David and Dolores moved to Morganton, Georgia to live on lake Blue Ridge. Their house was always full of family, friends, and teenagers, and Dolores loved cooking and caring for them. They called her "Momma Gibbs." In 1987, Dolores went to work at NorthWest Home Health (Amedysis) where she earned her CNA license. While working, Dolores attended numerous college courses and advanced to become the office manager. For 32 years, she dedicated herself to running an organized, friendly, and inviting office. Dolores retired twice from Amedysis, but when they called her needing help, she returned because her co-workers were her family. She finally retired in 2020 at the age of 79, and she and David enjoyed a peaceful life of sitting on the balcony, looking over the lake, camping, traveling, and spending time with family and friends.
Dolores started attending Hot House Baptist Church at the age of 12 and became the pianist. She was the Director of the Christmas program from age 20 to 80 and loved church family. She also played the piano for groups like The Happy Goodmans, Inspirations, and the Chinese Orchestra. She taught piano lessons and spent countless hours sitting at the piano teaching her girls, and many others, to sing. Dolores had a God-given talent for music, and she loved sharing her gift with others.
Dolores was a very special lady; she loved deeply and gave every bit of herself to her family and friends. She loved flowers, gardening, Broadway shows, camping, cooking, and having a house full of people. She will live forever in the hearts of her family and friends
