Cochran Funeral Home and Crematory of Blairsville announces funeral services for Mr. Dean Self, age 80, of Blairsville, who passed away on Monday, April 17, 2017, at his home.
Dean was born in Union County, Georgia, a son of the late Marion Self and the late Ollie Nix Self. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. Dean was the owner and operator of Self Lawn and Garden Equipment with an special expertise in small engine repair. Dean was a member of Young Cane Masonic Lodge, #597, and had also been active in the Lions Club. In his younger days, Dean enjoyed drag racing at Lloyd's Dragstrip earning numerous trophies. Dean was one of the first Battalion Chiefs of Union County Fire Department for Station 3. He is described by those who have worked with him as a silent leader and mentor
Surviving family members will treasure their memories forever: loving daughter and son-in-law, Faye and Tony Brown, of Blairsville; two brothers: Lawrence Self and Glenn Self; sister, Valene Newman; three grandchildren: Heather, Deana, and Farrah. He had been preceded in death by his wife of 45 years, Hazel Dyer Self, and a son Allan; a brother, Albert Self; and a sister, Mary Augusta Gazaway
Funeral services for Mr. Self have been scheduled for Wednesday, April 19, 2017, at 2:00 p.m., to be held in the Chapel of Cochran Funeral Home and Crematory of Blairsville. The following gentlemen have been selected to serve as pallbearers: J.M. Grizzle, Rusty Fortenberry, Nick DiMartino, Jerry Reid, Charlie Davis, and Gary Rogers. Burial will be in Choestoe Baptist Church Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday evening, April 18, 2017, from 6 until 9 p.m.
