Daniel Irvin McKinnon, 72, of Murphy, born May 11, 1943, passed from this life on Tuesday, March 22, 2016. He was surrounded by his wife, Dot, of 50 years of marriage, with his daughter, Vicki, and granddaughter, Abigail.
He was born in Macon, Ga., but truly found home after moving to Murphy. He was best known as Murphy Postmaster from 1975 until he retired in August 2003.
Dan was a member of Peachtree Memorial Baptist Church. He was an original member of Peachtree Volunteer Fire Department and was treasurer for a number of years.
He was a member of Murphy Civitan from 1975 until it disbanded a few years ago. He served as treasurer for more than 30 years. He served as chairman of Claxton fruitcake sales, candy box collection and chairman of the hot dog fundraiser wagon. The club and its work was dear to his heart.
Dan was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest and Janelda Nichols McKinnon, and a sister, Ernestine, who died in childhood.
Surviving are his wife and partner in life, Dorothy McKinnon; loving daughter, Vicki McKinnon; granddaughter, the joy of his life, Abigail McKinnon Scott, and her father, Alan Scott; two sisters, Jerry Johnson and husband Jimmy of Savannah, Ga., and Judy Baker and husband Tom of Buford, Ga.; one brother, Ellis McKinnon of Savannah, Ga. Dan was very close to his wife's family and enjoyed spending time with them, one surviving uncle, Huron Nichols and wife Marilyn of Lake Park, Ga.
We are grateful to his friends from his postal family. We are grateful to our church family and all the prayers that were said in his name.
