Claire Eileen Feeney Day, age 82, of Hendersonville, NC, passed away on Saturday, October 28, 2017 in Union County Nursing Home in Blairsville.
Claire was born October 1, 1936, in Wilmington, Delaware, a daughter of the late Howard and Celeste Feeney. Claire was the third child out of six siblings. Claire graduated from Ursuline Academy in Wilmington in 1953, and attended and graduated from Misericordia School of Nursing with a RN degree. In 1984, Claire graduated from University of Florida with a Bachelor's degree. In May of 1956 Claire married Ralph C. Day, Jr. and started a family. As a working mother of four children, "Chet" - Ralph C. Day, III, Kathryn Day Taylor, Lisa Day Howard and Jeffrey C. Day, she began her nursing career at St. Vincent Hospital in Jacksonville, Florida. In 1963, the family moved to Gainesville, Florida where Claire worked as a RN at Shands Teaching Hospital in the Kidney Dialysis Department under the prominent physician, Dr. Robert Cade, the inventor of Gatorade. From 1984 until her retirement in 1997, Claire worked as a Kidney Transplant Coordinator at Shands Hospital. Upon retirement, Claire moved to Hendersonville, North Carolina, where she, as a spiritual person, completed classes to become a reverend in her community. Claire was very active with her group of friends seeking a spiritual approach to life. She was an avid reader, loved the outdoors, enjoyed water activities and logged many miles walking outdoors.
Children are "Chet" Ralph C. Day, III, Kathryn Day Taylor, Lisa Day Howard and Jeffrey C. Day; grandchildren: Christopher Day, Barrett Day, David M. Taylor III, Alexandra Day Taylor, William Joseph Howard and Shawna Nicole Day and three great grandchildren; brother, Peter Feeney; sister, Susan Kerwin, sister-in-laws: Loretta Feeney, Suzanne Feeney, Doris Feeney and Kathryn Day Wall; many nieces and nephews also survive.
Memorial services have been scheduled for Saturday, November 18, 2017, at 11 a.m., to be held in the Chapel of Cochran Funeral Home of Blairsville, with Deacon Larry Casey officiating.
