Charles E. Haines, husband of the late Betty S. Haines, passed away peacefully in Dahlonega Georgia on January 15, 2017 at the age of 94.
"Chuck" was born in Washington DC. He had a passion for his family, staying physically fit, college sports, and academia. He began his collegiate career at Clemson University in South Carolina. His studies were interrupted by his military service with the US Army Paratroopers during WWII. He later received his Bachelors from Clemson University, Masters from the University of Maryland, and a PhD in Animal Nutrition and Physiology from the University of Florida. He and Betty Severns married in 1944 and remained together until her passing on October 2, 2002. During their life together, Chuck's career granted them many adventures. While working for The United Fruit Company, Chuck and his family lived in Honduras for several years during the 1950's. The next journey led them to Belle Glade, Florida, where Chuck worked for the University of Florida as a research scientist. In 1966, Chuck accepted a position with the Rockefeller Research Institute which lead him and his family to Brazil. While working with the US Government, Chuck and his family continued living abroad in foreign countries, including Paraguay, the Bahamas, and Saudi Arabia. In 1979, Chuck and Betty moved to Washington, D.C. Before his retirement in 1987 from the US Government, Chuck proudly spent his time evaluating the progress of US Government sponsored agricultural projects, both domestically and overseas. Chuck and Betty spent their retirement years in Athens, Georgia, close to family and friends.
