CECILE LOUISE HALL CATE PENFOLD
Cecile Louise Hall Cate Penfold was born October 13, 1924, in Knoxville, Tennessee, to Fannie Bell Thompson Hall and Claude Vernon, Hall, Sr. She graduated from Central High School in Knoxville, attended Draughon Business College and the University of Tennessee.
Her entire working years were spent in the medical field. She began her career as receptionist at Cristenberry Infirmary in Knoxville; continuing at the Acuff Clinic in Knoxville; before moving to Atlanta to work at Emory University School of Medicine, where she spent several years as Technical and Executive Administrator to noted research physician, E. Converse Pierce, II, MD. Dr. Pierce conducted studies in the United States, as well as in Nairobi, Kenya, Africa.
During her time in the medical field, Mrs. Penfold helped organize the Georgia Medical Assistants' Association. She served as President, as well as other offices, and was a lifetime member.
Mrs. Penfold retired from Emory in 1989, and she and her husband, Eric, decided to move from Atlanta to Blue Ridge, where they had had a cabin for many years.
Mrs. Penfold enjoyed many activities, including her love of reading, gardening, collecting antiques, sailing, and travel with her beloved husband, Eric. They were fortunate to visit many areas of the United States, and well as numerous trips to foreign countries. One of her favorite excursions was going to Maine, to visit Dr. Pierce and his wife, Esther. She made her final trip to Maine in 2012, to visit Esther, and stay at "The Bungalow", the Pierces' guest house.
When her health and eyesight began to fail further, leaving her unable to travel, she enjoyed looking, with the help of a magnifier, at the numerous pictures and souvenirs she had collected over the years. She had a large repertoire of interesting stories from both her medical career and her many travels, and enjoyed sharing the stories with everyone.
Mrs. Penfold is predeceased by her parents, her husband, Eric, and two brothers, Claude Vernon Hall,Jr., and Carl E. Hall. She is survived by step-son, Roy Penfold and wife Jennie, Denfordshire, England; two step-grandsons, Eric Penfold and wife, Beth, Libertyville, Illnois, and Nigel Penfold, New Territory, Hong Kong; three great grandchildren; two nephews, Claude Hall III, Callaway, Virginia, and Stuart Hall, Dandridge, Tennessee; three nieces, Cynthia Hall Petrous, Knoxville, Tennessee; Susan H.
