Bretney Marvin Turner

Cochran Funeral Home of Blairsville announces funeral services for Bretney Marvin Turner, age 36, of Blairsville, Georgia, who passed away on Wednesday, November 13, 2013 in Emory Midtown Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia.
Bretney was born in Blairsville on April 14, 1977, and lived here for his lifetime. He graduated from Union County High School, and received an Associates Degree from Truett McConnell College. He later studied Medical Lab Technology at North Georgia Technical College. Bretney served as the Band Drum Major for three years at Union County High School. He played the baritone and xylophone during the band's performances. His love for music and his abilities in music were inherited from his grandfather, Bryson Turner. A member of First United Methodist Church of Union County, Bretney sang in the church choir, and with two of his aunts, and became a very good pianist.
Bretney was employed for 10 years at Woody Gap School as a ParaPro (Teacher's Aide). He often spent the time working with special needs students and those who needed extra help. The children at Woody Gap loved him and always called him "Mr. Bretney". He always would remember the students by name when he saw them some time later outside of the school, and there was always a smile. His work with the students and faculty earned him several "Most Spirited" Employee awards. As a student himself, Bretney received band awards and other educational awards, including the "John Phillip Sousa" Award, and he was selected to represent Union County High School during the 1996 Olympics, as a member of the Olympic Dream Team.
As with all who pass this way, we must face many trials and tribulations, and Bretney faced more than many of these. At the age of three, he had his first surgery, a spleenectomy. Being diagnosed with ITP (low blood platelets). This followed him throughout his lifetime. When he was eighteen, there was kidney failure, and loss of hearing.
Love conquers all and family love towers over all. His brother Burton gave him his first kidney then family love came alive once again and his aunt, Bivian Hughes, gave him a second kidney. All the love he received helped to improve his quality of life, and gave him the freedom to live a more normal life.
Throughout his life, even with the challenges he faced, Bretney maintained his sense of humor - able to make people laugh in most situations. Family relations and our personal relations help each of us to cope with those times the need is greatest. Bretney would remind us to keep those ties strong and to live life to the fullest.
Bretney will be greatly missed by all who knew him, especially his loving family members: father and mother, Myron and Brenda Turner, of Blairsville; brother, Burton Turner, and his wife, Cindy, of Acworth, Georgia; brother, Barry Turner, and his wife, Angie, of Las Vegas, Nevada; a niece, Presley Turner; nephews: Blake, Brady and Parker Turner. many other relatives and friends also will share the memory of Bretney.
Preceding him in death was his paternal grandparents, Bryson and Ethel Turner; maternal grandparents, Guy and Rendie Ledford; his aunt, Nancy Turner Buchanan; his uncles Bruce, Bryce and Bronze Ledford, and cousin Cindy Turner Dew.
Funeral services for Bretney have been scheduled for Saturday, November 16, 2013, at 1:00 p.m., at First United Methodist Church of Union County, with Rev. Mark Burgess officiating. The body will lie instate at the church starting at 12 noon on Saturday before the services begin. Special music will be presented by Carolyn Filer and Delga Cox. The following gentlemen have been selected to serve as pallbearers: Luke Foster, Burton Turner, Barry Turner, David Turner, Marvin Turner, John Bryson Turner, Parker Turner, and Brady Turner. Honorary pallbearers are Blake & Presley Turner. Burial will be in Union Memory Gardens Cemetery. The family will be receiving friends at the funeral home on Friday evening, November 15, 2013, between the hours of 6 until 9 p.m.
Flowers are being graciously accepted; however, if you wish to do so, memorial contributions may be made to First United Methodist Church Activity Center - The Mac.
