Bertha Mae Owenby Stalcup

Mrs. Bertha Mae Owenby Stalcup, age 80 of Murphy, NC, passed away Tuesday, May 11, 2010 at Murphy Medical Center.
Mrs. Stalcup was born in Cherokee , NC to the late Edward Pitman Owenby and Mattie Hughes Owenby. She was a member of New Martins Creek Baptist Church. Bertha was a great cook and never let a stranger go hungry. She enjoyed playing bingo at the nursing home, and sang in the Owenby Family Gospel Singers in the 1960's. Bertha was preceded in death by brothers, Charles Owenby, Gweyn Owenby, half brother, Walter Owenby, sisters, Gladys Owenby, Willie Stalcup, and Glee Owenby, granddaughter, Meredith Leigh Stalcup.
Survivors include: husband, Harvey Greene Stalcup of Murphy, NC; son & daughter-in-law, Larry & Connie Stalcup of Murphy, NC, son & daughter-in-law, Mark & Jill Stalcup of Murphy, NC; daughter & son-in-law, Betty & Joe Carson of Vine Grove, KY, daughter & son-in-law, Sandy & Bobby Clayton of Murphy, NC; sisters, Helen Stalcup of Murphy, NC, Aleen Roberson of Bryson City, NC, Carolyn Middleton of Asheville, NC; seven grandchildren, six great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Thursday evening May 13 at 7:00 p.m. from the Chapel of Cochran Funeral Home with Rev. Hoyt Brown, Rev. Harold Stiles and Rev. Calvin Murphy officiating. Music will be provided by New Martins Creek Baptist Church Choir. Interment will follow on Friday, May 14 at 12:00 p.m., in the Old Martins Creek Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Jody Carson, Erik Philpott, Colton Eastman, Jason Stalcup, Lonnie Stalcup, Danny Clayton, Barry Clayton and Jamie Lance. Honorary pallbearers will be Nickolas Stalcup and Ronnie Palmer.
The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 5 until 7 prior to the service at the funeral home
