Bertha Elizabeth Carter

On Monday August 3, 2020 Bertha Elizabeth "Beth" Carter, loving mother, grandmother, and former writer for Putnam County Courier Journal passed away at the age of 89. She was born August 20, 1930.

Beth or Bert as her family would at times lovingly call her was born in Oasis, Georgia to Charles and Eva Watson. . Upon graduating from Epworth High School in Fannin County, GA , she made her way to Atlanta first as an operator for the phone company. Her taste for travel lead her to become a Delta flight attendant where she met her husband Henry L. Carter who she and most knew him as Nick Carter. She and Nick moved from Florida to Houston, Texas shortly after they married and eventually settled in Irving Texas.There she was the loving mother to two sons Dave, and Scott, and a wonderful grandmother to six grand kids by birth. Plus a number that continued to grow when you include every neighborhood kid that came by to try her famous pumpkin bread or help her in the kitchen. She also managed to have time to start an interior decorating business and get involved in local politics, which resulted in a position on the Irving Library Board. She loved animals and she had a name for every squirrel, duck, bird or snake she would see in her yard. Upon retiring with Nick and moving to Florida she fell in love with her local towns of Crescent City and Pomona Park. Where the same pattern of being the neighborhood mom and grandmom repeated itself. It was there that she reignited her love of politics and served at the voting centers most of her 30 plus years in Florida. Never one to sit still, after several years of doing volunteer work for the Women’s club, her church and other local charities, she applied for employment to write a column for the local newspaper in Crescent City, the Putnam County Courier Journal. For close to 30 years she was responsible for a regular weekly column that she would hand write on a legal pad and one of the staff would have to type for the paper. She was told she would be replaced when the paper could find someone that could type and wanted the job. She also enjoyed going to local events to take pictures that would accompany the column. She used many opportunities when she didn't have enough material to report to insert current events about her family and loved ones. Beth never met a stranger, was always smiling, always on the go, and so very filled with an amazing vibrancy that affected everyone she came into contact with. She is loved by many and will be missed. Proceeded in death by husband Nick Carter her mother Eva Watson Richie Cox, father Charles Watson, brothers Bill, Ernie, Calvin and Marvin. Sisters, Allie Mae, and Mamie. Beth is survived by brother James and sister Mary Lou, sons Dave and wife Linda, Scott and wife Dinah. Grand children Cason and Sarah, Spencer, Corbin, Matthew, Camryn and Manning, Reid and Great Grandaughter Brecklyn.
