Barbara DeYoung (Curry)

Mrs. Barbara Louise DeYoung, age 84, of Young Harris, Georgia passed away Saturday, September 24, 2011 at Union General Hospital. Mrs. DeYoung was born on March 25, 1927 in Boston, Massachusetts to the late Richard and Louise Holmberg Curry. She attended Mt. Ida Junior College and transferred to Boston University where she graduated with a Bachelors degree in English and further post graduate school work in the field of Journalism. She was also an accomplished concert pianist and composer. She composed a nocturne that was played by the Boston Symphony Orchestra and Conducted by Arthur Fridler. Barbara taught High School English, worked as a Real Estate Agent and worked as an advertising manager for the publishing firm, Ginn & Company in Boston from 1962 to 1976. Her interest in other cultures led her to write seven books for the "First Book of..." Series, some of which include: First Book of Incas, First Book of Mayans, and First Book of Aztecs. Barbara and her late husband of 33 years, Andrew DeYoung, moved to the Young Harris/ Hiawassee Area to retire in 1986 and operated a printing business. Barbara served as the president for the Humane Society Mountain Shelter and was instrumental to the development of the facilities that you see today. She was preceded in death by her parents; loving husband, Andrew DeYoung and a brother, Richard J. Curry, Jr..

She will be lovingly remembered and missed by her daughter; Sandra Beck of Port Townsend, Washington; Step Daughter, Molly Haggblom of Lancaster, Pennsylvania; and nephews Jim and Daniel Curry of Camillus, New York.

Memorial Services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, October 3, 2011 from the Chapel of Cochran Funeral Home in Blairsville. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 10:00 a.m. until the start of the service.
