Alvin Vernon Dyer

Alvin Vernon Dyer, age 81, of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away on October 22, 2023.

Alvin was born in Union County, Georgia on May 5, 1942, one of seven children in the household.  His family lived in the Choestoe District of Union County, where his father was a share cropper, and they attended Pine Top Baptist Church.  His father always emphasized the importance of the family attending church together. Al's parent's names were Rance and Allie Dyer.  Allie helped Rance share crop; both parents and children worked together and attended church together.

Alvin was always proud of being a member of the very first Union County Panthers Football Team.  He would walk 10-15 miles from practice if he couldn't catch a ride. Two days after he graduated from Union County High School, Al joined the military.  This was always his dream, to be in the Army Infantry.  He served for 22 years, and served in many locations, including Vietnam, Germany and Korea, in addition to U.S. locations.

After retiring from the Army, he worked at Fort Campbell School System.

In 2002, Al returned home to Blairsville, Union County, Georgia....his home.  He returned to Pine Top Church, the church he had attended with his parents.  He was active in the choir and made sure to attend all events.

His favorite pastime was sitting on the porch with his sweetheart and friend, Frances Collins Kent, and of course, his dog, Dixie.

Visitation and Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, October 26th, 2023, starting at 11 a.m., and the funeral starting at 2:00 p.m. Pastor Billy NIcholson will officiate the service.  North Georgia Honor Guard will present Military Honors at graveside, and the following gentlemen will serve as pallbearers: Gerald Brown, Phillip Smith, Johnny Holbrooks, Jim Brown, Rob Almond, and Joel Keith.  Serving as honorary escort to the family was Tony Dyer. Burial was in Pine Top Baptist Church Cemetery.
